Patten Free Library Ornament

Patten Free Library Ornament

Founded in 1847, the Patten Free Library has been a cornerstone of Bath’s intellectual and cultural life for generations. Originally established as a subscription library by the Patten brothers, George and John, it became a free public resource in 1890 following a generous gift from Galen C. Moses, who funded the construction of a permanent library building with the vision that it be open to all.

Designed by architect George Harding, the historic library opened its doors to the community on January 1, 1891. Over time, it has thoughtfully evolved to meet the needs of its growing audience, with expansions in 1961 and 1998 that introduced dedicated children’s and young adult spaces, as well as enhanced research and community areas.

Today, the Patten Free Library remains a vital gathering place—committed to lifelong learning, literacy, and access to a dynamic range of resources. Through its programs, partnerships, and welcoming spaces, it continues to enrich the lives of individuals and strengthen the fabric of the Bath community.
